Class of 1946

Mrs. Maureen Horton Davis Cathey and Mrs. Martha Jean Bills Walker had this to say about their 1946 class: "attending William Hooper Council High School prepared us for life." During our tenure there, we were able to do very well with the few resources we had.

Due to the war, many of our male teachers and classmates were away serving their country which left Mrs. Susie P. Gandy and Mrs. Helen Fearn as co-principals. Our co-principals had dual roles also as our teachers. We had wonderful, caring teachers. We can only remember a few of them. Mrs. Helen Fearn taught algebra. Mrs. Susie P. Gandy taught English and directed the senior choir. Mrs. Frances Swoopes taught chemistry. Mrs. Annie Pearl Fields taught home economics. Mr. Edward Johnson taught English and a lot of the girls thought he was the cats' meow. Mrs. Ella Kendricks taught English and it was said that Isaac Rooks was her pet. Mrs. Harper taught French and Mrs Cathey remarked that when she went to college that she was one of the few students who had had a foreign language in high school.
